SECRETARIAT EMPHASIZES THE CHALLENGE OF COMPETITIVENESS OF ALBANIAN PRODUCTS IN THE FORUM OF ACCESS TO LOCAL PRODUCTS

Tirana, 30 September 2020

Forum of Access to Local Products – a new initiative to support and promote local products was launched by the Ministry of Finance and Economy (MFE), Albanian Investment Development Agency (AIDA), Albanian Rural Development Agency (ARDA), with the aim of discussing with representatives of chambers of commerce and entrepreneurship on policies to be undertaken in support of local products.

In this first forum, it was discussed the importance of products “Made in Albania” and support policies for creating a chain from production to regional markets. By empowering local products, the government expressed the intention to develop the employment sector, increase per capita income, and consequently develop an economy with a stable foundation even in times of challenge.

The Secretariat of the Investment Council stressed that the COVID-19 crisis reaffirmed the unique importance of sustainable communication and state-private partnership for the well-functioning of the economy and timely mitigation of the consequences of the health crisis. In the context of the delocalization of some markets from Asia, Albanian products may start to consider market potentials in the region—also confirmed in the Secretariat survey (April 2020) by several interviewed importers. Head of the Secretariat, Ms Diana Leka suggested that perhaps the time has come to discuss a list of “strategic” products/industries for the years to come, which should probably be firmly supported by policies aimed at guaranteeing a specific “niche” for the competitiveness of the Albanian economy in a timely manner.
